How the Urinary System Works: Kidneys, Bladder & Urination Process

1. Blood Arrives at the Kidneys

2. Urine Travels to the Bladder

Once urine is formed, it needs to get out.

  • Urine flows down the ureters: two thin tubes connecting each kidney to the bladder

  • Small muscular contractions (peristalsis) gently push urine downward

  • The bladder receives the urine and stores it, expanding like a balloon as it fills

  • Sensors in the bladder wall detect fullness and send signals to your brain

You start feeling the urge when your bladder is about half full, even though it can hold much more.

3. Urination: The Final Release

When you're ready to go, your brain takes over.

  • Your brain signals the sphincter muscles to relax

  • Muscles in the bladder wall contract, squeezing urine out

  • Urine exits through the urethra

  • Waste leaves your body, and the cycle resets
